  • Lucy Pullen is a Canadian artist and academic based in New York. She exhibits nationally and internationally. Selected solo exhibitions include The Blue Building Gallery in Halifax, The Henry Art Gallery in Seattle, Artspeak and The Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver among others. Group exhibitions include The Festival of Independents at The Tate Modern in London England, CAFK+A ‘18 in Kitchener Waterloo, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, The Vancouver Art Gallery and Helen Pitt Gallery in Vancouver, SL Simpson Gallery in Toronto, Optica in Montréal, Art Metropole in Toronto and The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia among others. Her work is held in public, private and institutional collections. Site-specific and permanent installations include Unison Arts in New Paltz NY, Google Canada’s Head Office in Kitchener, The Perimeter Institute of Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, and the Cloud Chamber in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Victoria.

    Pullen studied spatial analysis and visualization at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn (cert.), media and communication at The European Graduate School in Saas Fee Switzerland (A.B.D.) for the purpose of making art. She attended the Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture in Maine, the Bemis Center in Omaha, The Banff Centre in Alberta Canada, the Straumur Art Commune in Hafnarfjordur Iceland, as artist in residence. She holds graduate and undergraduate degrees from Tyler School for Art & Architecture in Philadelphia, and NSCAD University (formerly The Nova Scotia College of Art & Design) in Halifax by way of Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science & Art in New York City and The University of King’s College in Halifax.

    Previously held positions include an Assistant Professorship The University of Victoria, where she received tenure from the Faculty of Fine Arts for her contribution to the Department of Visual Arts. She has since led undergraduate and graduate seminars at CUNY Brooklyn College and Rutgers Mason Gross among others, and is a returning guest artist at The Vermont Studio Center in Johnson Vermont and the Parks & Open Space GAUD Pratt Institute. Pullen has a significant history of interdisciplinary collaboration. She welcomes opportunities discuss ideas about art and public space, and worked with Dr. Justin Albert and the Dept. of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Victoria on The Cloud Chamber, a freestanding particle detector that presents cosmic rays with the naked eye. Reviews and publications include Sculpture Magazine, Canadian Art, and C Magazine. The Canada Council for the Arts has supported the work since 1995, which was nominated for a Sobey Art Award in 2004. Notable collaborations include interventions with Sandy Plotnikoff in Halifax; exhibitions with Will Rogan in San Francisco; and public works with Eleanor King in New York.
